Choosing your first Tillett seat upgrade can seem a little daunting if you’re new to performance seats.

However, in this article we will take you through some of the key considerations which should help narrow down your choice. Remember also that choosing a Tillett seat is a little like investing in a bespoke suit, and just like consulting your tailor, there are experts here at Tillett HQ, and within our authorised dealerships who can help and advise.

How will you use your Tillett Seat?

Maybe an obvious one, but the first question you need to answer. If you intend to use your seat in a road production car, and maybe do the odd trackday, then your choices are wider. If however, you are racing in a regulated motorsport series, then you may need a seat which meets a specific FIA approval. [Cross-link to FIA article]. In this case you will need to select one of Tillett’s FIA approved seats - the C1, for example which is certified to FIA 8855-1999 standards.

How do you Measure up?

The next step is to determine both the available space in your vehicle, and your own space requirements - your physical shape and size.

Whilst most seats will fit most vehicles, it’s important to remember that some smaller sportscars are notoriously snug in the cabin. Cars like the Lotus Elise and Exige, and the hugely popular Mazda MX-5 being prime examples. In these cases you may need a Tillett seat designed specifically for restricted spaces - the B9-43 for example.

Measuring up is fairly straightforward however, and every seat in the Tillett range has a dimensions datasheet which can be viewed on the website. One dimension to be aware of is the position of the shoulder harness slots - ideally the shoulder straps should be able to route through and straight down over your chest, without having to climb up and over your shoulders. Also note that some models are available in both ‘standard’ and ‘XL’ size options, making dialling in your perfect fit even easier.

If you are still not sure on fit, some of our dealers carry demo seats which you can try out for size.

What Features are you Looking For?

Each Tillett seat in the range has different design features. Some offer a more laid back driving position, while others have cutaway side profiles in order to accommodate a standard 3-point road seatbelt if you don't have race harnesses fitted. Maybe you are looking for side impact head support ‘wings’, which are present on the C1.

Materials are another consideration, and you will see options for carbon fibre or GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic). Carbon fibre has the edge on strength, stiffness and lower weight, as well as giving a distinct woven aesthetic. GRP, on the other hand, is not far behind in terms of strength and weight, but utilises lower cost materials and a simpler and less labour intensive manufacturing process - meaning a lower priced seat.

Mounting Options

All Tillett seats are side mounted, and there are a range of Tillett brackets to suit your specific setup. All brackets have multiple pre-drilled bolt hole positions giving you the ability to choose your perfect seat angle, leg length and height.

To determine your bracket options, check out the ‘product information’ section of the specific seat you have chosen on the Tillett website. The NEW B10 for example, is compatible with 7 different brackets. It’s important to read through your options carefully as some are car specific.

Finishing up

Whilst not necessary for comfort, optional seat panels (pads) are popular especially for those using their seats everyday. Tillett panels can grip the body a little more, and offer a more predictable surface material to sit on in very hot or cold conditions. Panels can also dampen vibrations, and are preferred by some drivers from an aesthetics perspective.

For those looking for the ultimate in personalisation, factory-order bespoke seats can be commissioned, in which case customers can choose painted seats, coloured or patterned stitching detail, and custom embroidery (your car’s logo on the head panel, for example). Get in touch directly with Tillett for more information on this custom service.
